Daytonology was visiting Sacramento during Pride Month, so a belated Gay Pride thread for Dayton, doing some Gay History (and, yes, there is such a thing)

Before Gay Bars: The Levee

I don’t know if there were saloons or halls that catered to gays back before prohibition, but I do understand that in the police records there was one or two arrests per year for ‘impersonating a female”. Unfortunately the records don’t list particulars for those cases.

I do suspect, and this is just speculation, that the levee was a place of assignation, a cruising identify. I say this because the levee was the cruising spot in new times, but not actually on the levee, which makes me think that this is a call carried down from an earlier location that’s drawn-out gone.

Perhaps this location:

…which appears in the New Dayton Illustrated

This would be the levee wrapping around downtown from Wilkinson Street to the west and south down to 4th or 5th.

Outdoor cruising spots own been pretty common in gay history: famous ones were Hempstead Heath in London, the Siegesaule (Victory Column) in the Berlin Tiergarten, and the square in front of the Bolshoi Theatre in gay bars dayton ohio

Dayton LGBTQ City Guide

Dayton is the fourth largest town in Ohio, located north of Cincinnati, near the beautiful Miami Valley area of the state. Dayton has long been established as a city that shines in the fields of technology and analyze science. It is nicknamed the “City of Aviation” because it is the home of the National Museum of the Joined States Air Force and is also the hometown of the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, who invented flight. Even better, Dayton has a smaller, yet thriving LGBTQ community where all can feel noted and welcomed. If you’re thinking of making a move to Dayton, chances are, you’ll find plenty about it to love!

A Look at Dayton's History

Dayton was originally named after Captain Jonathan Dayton, who served in the Revolutionary War and was the youngest person to sign the United States Constitution, and who owned land in the Miami Valley area. The municipality was officially founded on April 1, 1796, by a dozen people acknowledged as “The Thompson Party,” who had traveled up the Great Miami River from Cincinnati. When Ohio officially became a mention in 1803, Dayton became the seat of Montgomery County. Dayton rem

Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 20 - 7:00 PM - Sinclair CC

We are very please to declare our Keynote speaker for Transgender Day of Remembrance 2024 is singer/song-writer, dancer, model, actor and activist, Laith Ashley.

Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual event here in Dayton to honor those trans person and non-conforming individuals who lost their lives in 2024 due to force. All to often these individuals are estranged from their families so it is altogether fitting that we honor them and celebrate the life lived.

On November 20th at 7:00 pm at Sinclair Collective College’s conference center we will read their names, and light a candle for these individuals. Additionally, Khris Goins, founder of Black Trans Men of Ohio will speak along with Judas, a 21 y.o. person, and Chrissy Ray, a trans female and of course our keynote speaker, Laith Ashley.

Laith launched his career with a campaign for Barneys New York, back in February 2014. In 2017 he was the first transgender man to be featured in a Diesel campaign, and in February 2020, became one of the faces of the Abercrombie FIERCE campaign. Laith has been on the cover of countless magazines and has ha
