It’s been a while since a new same-sex attracted bar has opened in Philly’s iconic Gayborhood. But that changes today. The Little Gay Pub, located at 102 South 13th Street on the corner of Drury Street, is an elevated bar from Washington D.C. The three friends behind the project — co-owners Benjamin Gander, Dusty Martinez, and Dito Sevilla — just announced they’ll be opening their Philly location with a few local twists added to the decor and menu.

Running a prevent is a tough business in the best of circumstances. Overhead is elevated, customers fickle, and staff transient. Between 1997 and 2007, the number of drinking establishments in the United States fell by 11.1 percent, from 52,825 to 46,924, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Gay bars have an even tougher road to profitability. Damron, which has been keeping track of gay bars since 1964, showed a 12 percent drop in their number between 2005 and 2011, from 1,605 LGBT bars and clubs to 1,405. Can a bar create money when it's asking 90 percent of the population to stay away?
