When in Madrid, Do as the Gays &#; Foremost 12 Gay Bars in Chueca

In Spain, there’s a rather quirky little verb, “trasnochar,” which loosely translates to ‘party through the night.’ This gives you a good indication of Spain’s all-in attitude to nightlife. Drinking with your friends on a sunny terrace or in a charismatic, lively bar is inherent to Spanish customs, and naturally, Spain’s capital city is the optimal place to dive headfirst—or any other body part first—into it. Nowhere is this truer than in Madrid’s gay neighborhood of Chueca, where you are never at a decline to find a place to have a imbibe, with a myriad of different gay bars to choose from all through the week—especially on the weekend.

Each bar has its own distinct character, so here are twelve of the crème de la crème to visit on any alcohol-fueled trip to Chueca—whether as the main event, part of a bar crawl, or a precursor to a unrestrained night destined to conclude with a drunken 7 a.m. club exit.

El 12

If there is a lock that most epitomizes the spirit of Chueca, El 12 is it. Part bar, part club, it is one of the most popular bars in Chueca. You can uncover all types of Queer people here, from bears to twinks to musc

Where to identify the gay bars and clubs in Madrid – Chueca

The main gay area in Madrid is called Chueca and is named after Federico Chueca who could be considered Madrids first gay icon.

The area spans about 1km north of Gran Via (one of the main streets) and east to west between Calle Hortaleza and Paseo de Recoletos. The main bulk of lgbtq+ bars in Chueca are found within ten minutes walking distance of Plaza De Chueca – where the metro station is found.

Chueca is walkable from the ‘city centre’ (Plaza Del Sol) or just a couple of metro stops.

It is obvious you have arrived in the gay district given that the walls of the metro station in Chueca are painted floor to ceiling

Gay Clubs, Parties and Events in Madrid

Gay clubs in Madrid usually don't get busy within the first hours of their regular opening hours, but then they are often crowded and packed till closing.
Note for budget travellers: Entrance fees often include 1 drink of your choice. To rescue money you could operate the voucher for the more expensive drink you plan to have during the night. Also, flyers or passes can store you about 3 € entrance fee and can be found in same-sex attracted bars, cafes and shops.

About Madrid and its gay life

With a population of million, the Spanish capital Madrid is the third largest city in the European Union. The rise of the city began in the 16th century under the Spanish line of the House of Habsburg, when Philip II moved the royal court to Madrid. In the 18th century Charles III contributed much to the economic upturn of the urban area by modernizing the common infrastructure.
During the Spanish Civil War Madrid was heavily destroyed by breeze raids. After the conclusion of Franco's dictatorship the so-called Movida Madrileña – a hedonistic cultural movement that celebrated everything shrill and modern – began to emerge in Madrid. Pedro Almodóvar became its internationally best-known representative. Even today Madrid is a center of attraction for party people from all over Europe, it is more original, more ›Spanish‹ and not as touristy as the more fancy and fashionable Barcelona, the
