Meet Dr. David Z. Gay

Why did you decide to become a doctor?

When I was eight years old, I went to the eye doctor. And I was fascinated by all the machines and equipment.

I had an eye exam and ended up needing glasses. I hated those glasses. And I idea that there should be people that could correct eyes, so nobody would need glasses. Throughout the years, I always had a love of medicine. And I always was pointed towards surgery. As I got older, I looked at multiple alternative surgery specialties. And in medical school, I fell in love with oculofacial plastic surgery. It united my love of fixing things. With being capable to help people.

What is the most challenging proedure you perform?

Usually tumors behind the eye. It's a very difficult space to get into, and the risks are very upper. It is a very delicate surgery. That takes a lot of period and skill.

What is your most memorable case?

My most memorable case is productive on a young lad who was only six years old. He had a tumor on his optic nerve. I had to work on the nerve that sends a signal from the eye to the brain. This y

Dr. David Gay, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder, elbow, and wrist disorders, has joined AdventHealth Medical Group and will control at AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway.

Gay previously cared for patients at AdventHealth Palm Coast for over a decade before serving as director of orthopedics at UF Health St. Johns in St. Augustine.

AdventHealth Medical Group is a team of nearly 450 employed physicians and advanced practitioners representing 30 different medical specialties. With 75 training locations across Flagler, Lake, Sumter, and Volusia counties, AdventHealth Medical Group clinicians collectively cared for more than one million patient visits in 2024.

Gay’s go back to AdventHealth Medical Collective after five years marks a homecoming to the community and is part of the healthcare organization’s plan to bring nearly 15 orthopedic specialists to the area in 2025.

About

I am Professor Emeritus of English Literature. Over the past five decades, I have taught first-year courses and undergraduate courses in the history of reading, Milton, Shakespeare, sixteenth and seventeenth-century literature, Religion and literature, the Bible and literature, and special topics for upper level undergraduate and graduate students, including a courses on William Blake. I served recently as President of the International John Bunyan Society (2016-19), a scholarly community that focuses on Dissent and Nonconformity in the Long Reformation. I am continuing with a research project on reading urban spaces in literature and currently work for as co-editor with Rachel Adcock (Keele University UK) of Bunyan Studies: A Journal of Reformation and Nonconformist Culture.
