The Gay Farmer Helpline applications a vital service, and at times a lifeline
It was hugely encouraging to read, on The International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, of the positive impact that the Gay Farmer Helpline proposals to an under-represented and often isolated group.
I deal regularly with divorce cases with a farming connection &#; be it acting for a land owning husband, for a spouse who seeks their &#;fair share&#; or for an adult child who is set to inherit. No two cases are the same, but the frequent threads woven through farming divorces relate to inherited and gifted assets, issues of liquidity amongst the asset rich/income poor and succession planning.
The efforts deeply interested in trying to hold a farm within the family or alternatively, create an heir (and retain them interested in farming), whilst maintaining income and profitability can be even more difficult to deal with when considered through an LGBTQ+ prism in what are often inherently (small &#;c&#;) conservative communities.

Keith Ineson
Canon Keith Ineson, from Cheshire and based in Northern Ireland, is a chaplain who set up the ‘Gay Farmer Helpline’ in - the only service of its kind in the UK - to support men in isolated rural communities struggling with their sexuality.
Growing up in a farming family, Keith realised he was same-sex attracted at the age of 14 but only felt able to come out at the age of After founding Cheshire’s Agricultural Chaplaincy Team, Keith began working with gay farmers and realised how many people across the nation in the same situation must also be hiding their sexuality and consequently facing enormous pressures on their mental health and wellbeing. Since its launch, the &#;Gay Farmer Helpline&#; has received new callers every week, and Keith&#;s work was featured in a documentary Landline, made in collaboration with BFI Flare, which showcased stories of some of the individuals who have been supported through the helpline.

The Gay Farmer helpline
- The Gay farmer helpline allows you to talk to someone if you are going through a difficult time with farming – isolation, disease, market prices etc. but also dealing with these issues and being lgbtq+ can often make you feel alone and that you are the only one, however this is not the case!
