Prior to the age that European explorers arrived in the area, it was inhabited by Costanoan Indians. In 1777, Jose Joaquin Morago, a Spanish settler, founded a farming community in the area, and initially named it Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe for St. Joseph – or San Jose, for short.
