Overturning ‘Darwin’s paradox’
Imperial researchers are using a modern approach to understand why
same-sex behaviour is so common across the animal kingdom
In 1910, a team of scientists set off on the Terra Nova Expedition to exploreAntarctica. Among them was George Murray Levick, a zoologist and photographer who would be the first researcher to study the world’s largest Adélie penguin colony. He chronicled the animals’ daily activities in great detail.
In his notebooks, he described their sexual behaviour, including sex between male birds. However, none of these notes would materialize in Levick’s published papers. Concerned by the graphic content, he only printed 100 copies of The sexual habits of the Adélie penguin to circulate privately. The last remaining copy was recently unearthed providing valuable insights into animal homosexuality research.
But forays into animal homosexuality investigate long predate Levick, with observations published as far back as the 1700s and 1800s. More than 200 years later, explore has moved past some of the taboos those early researchers faced and shown that homosexuality is much more com
Queer Atmospheres
10 years ago, X-Men: First Class brought the seemingly dead franchise back to life. After the critically panned X-Men: The Last Stand five years prior, many wondered if the series could ever bounce back from it’s failures. To earn viewers and long-time fans back on board, Matthew Vaughn injected life endorse into the franchise, and along with this existence came queerness. While you may know the X-Men franchise as being overtly queer now, before First Class, any subtext was driven out to center on the (ridiculous) passion triangle between Wolverine, Jean Grey and Cyclops. The chemistry between the newcomers was undeniable, and with the help of lgbtq+ Tumblr users (hi!), the X-Men franchise was reborn as the queer series we now love.
Now, I know you may be thinking, “who the hell are Alex and Darwin?” Well dear reader, I’m glad you asked, because I’ve been wanting to talk about them for a hot minute! Alex Summers and Armando Muñoz (Darwin) are two dudes who Professor X and Magneto recruit to unite their team of mutants in 1962. When First Class premiered, yes, I was struck by the chemistry between Xavier and Magneto - who wasn’t? But, because I hold a severe c

Hi, I’m Meg and I am a volunteer tour guide for the Bridging Binaries LGBTQ+ tours at the Whipple Museum.
This microscope belonged to Charles Darwin, famous for his work on evolution in the nineteenth century, and former student at Cambridge. Darwin took this smaller microscope on his Beagle voyage between 1831 and 1836 and used it so much that on his return he suggested improvements to the blueprint. You can see an ad in this cabinet for a microscope QUOTE ‘made to the show design of Mr Darwin’. His work with barnacles on this Beagle voyage became central to his thinking on two-sex reproduction, and informed his later work on evolution.
In the Origin of Species, which he wrote in 1859, Darwin argued for ‘sexual selection’ – essentially that all sexual competition is for mates of the opposite sex, and that the more ‘attractive’ a partner was, the more likely it was to succeed. Darwin likely understood ‘Competition for mates’ in context of the tradition of Victorian courting. In fact some of Darwin’s initial thoughts on the matter had come from observing ornamentation in birds
Darwin of the astounding world of Gumball is actually gay?
Hi everyone I am Rip Tracker 86, this publication don't want to trie offend somebody of the LGBT community, this publication is just my opinion.
The Astounding World of Gumball maybe is not the optimal animated series, but sometimes have some joke who make us laugh, but the question here is:
The Character of Darwin is Gay?
That's a question I make to myself, because if we pay attention to the series, Darwin it's very affectionate with his brother Gumball, even in a episode was jealous about Penny own more time with Gumball.
My point?, Darwin have attitude Comparable Like a homosexual, before there were also cases of this appreciate Ursula in The brief mermaid or Hades in Hercules.
But not necessarily Darwin have to be Same-sex attracted in the series, maybe the reason of his attitude is because in his time as Gumball's pet, maybe Gumball was very affectionate with Darwin, after his transformation with his legs and arms, it's very affectionate in a way to utter thank you.
Well that's my opinion of one of the characters of The Amazing World of Gumball, we see us next time.
