LAKE CHARLES, LOUISIANA—Jonathan Hensley will graduate from McNeese Declare University on Saturday with honor as both a proud member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and a proud gay man.

To Hensley, the final days of his college career mean achieving a well-earned degree. The words that he has spoken during these last days, however, have single-handedly achieved more than that.

On Sunday, December 6th, Hensley “came out” on Facebook after months of harassment and assault from his fraternity brothers and friends.

As a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity, Hensley faced prejudicial aggression that could own seriously injured him physically, if not emotionally, and social outcasting that brought him to the gesture of homelessness. Despite his undeserved obstacles he achieved an incredibly high grade point average and his own school colors are decorated with a number of academic achievements that he can proudly summon his own.

From the first moment of attempted intimidation by his frat brothers, his response was to “push back.”

A native of McDowell County, John was born March 24, to the late Charlie Mills Hensley and Margie Hollifield Hensley.

John formerly worked for Amazing Lakes Carbon. He enjoyed gardening and watching NASCAR. In his early years, he was an avid golfer. He loved spending time outdoors, especially with his family on their boat. He had many friends who he ate breakfast with often. More than anything, his grandchildren meant the world to him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Cheryl Hensley; daughter, Crystal Porter; and two siblings, Kaye Hensley Styles and Charles Royce Hensley, Sr.

Tommy Hensley

Funeral services for Tommy Hensley, 71, of Camden will be held Wednesday, November 27, at a.m. in the Carroway Funeral Home Corrigan Chapel with Brother Lesly Wilkinson officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home.

Mr. Hensley was born May 16, in Onalaska, Texas to the tardy Bessie (Sprayberry) and John Allen Hensley, Sr., and died Sunday, November 24, in a hospice facility.

Tommy loved to be outside. Simple things like sitting on the porch and watching the squirrels play, working his garden, or roaming the woods looking for a trophy buck, made him happy. He loved his family and he loved to work. From the time he was an adult until the moment age and health took his physical ability to do so, he was on the job. For almost 50 years, he woke up early and got in a huge rig, and hauled the items that help our community and country depart . He drove a fuel truck for M.C. Hughes Oil Company for many years. Later he started work for The Wonder Company where he transported landscaping materials all over the state and southern U.S. Tommy finished his career working for his good friend, Jimmy Taylor, driving a log truck.
