Johnny Depp was interviewed by Vanity Impartial on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean 4 and had one fascinating revelation:“They couldn’t stand him. They just couldn’t be upright him,” Depp says of Disney’s reaction to his controversial interpretation of Sparrow. “I think it was Michael Eisner, the leader of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie.’ Depp reveals that he remained unfazed by the studio’s hysteria. “Upper-echelon Disney-ites, going, ‘What’s incorrect with him? Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay?…’ And so I actually told this lady who was the Disney-ite… ‘But didn’t you realize that all my characters are gay?’ Which really made her nervous.”

We all know how iconic he is, Johnny Depp's drunken pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, and during the grisly trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, some new data has emerged regarding Depp's interpretation of the non-existent script they had to work with in the production of the first film. As we've recognizable for years, Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer weren't the least bit impressed with Johnny's take on the character though and now Depp has told us a bit more about how Disney bigwigs were offended by his portrayal and wanted him to stop messing around, and play that bare-chested, classically macho pirate that they initially wanted him to be.
"It had all the hallmarks of a Disney movie, which is to say a predictable three-act structure, and the character of Captain Jack was more of a swashbuckling type who would swing in shirtless and be the hero. I had completely different ideas about the character, so I incorporated my notes into the character and brought that character to life, much to Disney's chagrin at first.

Johnny Depp revealed Disney executives were scared he was playing Captain Jack Sparrow as a gay traits in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies, Vanity Fair magazine reported Tuesday.
The mega franchise took more than $1billion at the box office, but Depp said Disney executives were concerned about his camp, drunken presentation of the pirate protagonist.
“They couldn’t stand him. They just couldn’t stand him,” Depp said. “I consider it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie.’”
But Depp said he ignored Disney’s fears and stuck to his instincts. He said: “Upper-echelon Disney-ites, [were] going, What’s untrue with him? Is he, you know, like some kind of weird simpleton? Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay? And so I actually told this girl who was the Disney-ite; ‘But didn’t you perceive that all my characters are gay?’ which really made her nervous.”
Depp spoke to the magazine to promote his fresh film “The Tourist,” which he stars in alongside Angelina Jolie.

JD: Well, there was a great book I read … What was it called? Sodomy and the Pirate Tradition. A very interesting book. I wasn’t exactly going for that with the traits. And Keith is not flamboyant in his behavior. Keith is pretty stealth. But with Jack, it was more thatI liked the idea of existence ambiguous, of taking this character and making everything a little bit … questionable. Because women were thought to be terrible luck on ships. And these pirates would move out for years at a time. So, you know, there is a possibility that one thing might lead to another. [x]
