Tolkien’s Queer Landscape: Three Papers on Middle-earth’s Heterotopias

The following papers will examine Tolkien’s queer landscapes of Middle-earth: from Arda’s extreme peaks and hidden underbellies, to her liminal, fae places, using the lens of Michel Foucault’s heterotopias.
Marita Arvaniti will introduce the panel and discuss Tolkien’s Faerian Drama and its relationship to the much-maligned Tom Bombadil episode, focusing on the queer figure of Tom Bombadil himself and his heterotopic domain.
Mariana Rios Maldonado will analyse the Barrow-downs, Dead Marshes, and Paths of the Dead as symbolic sites of death created during harrowing moments in the history of Middle-earth. Individuals who name as LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Queer , Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and other identities beyond these) represent a broad and fluid spectrum of natural sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and sex characteristics. While LGBTQIA+ people may give common cultural and social experiences and shared goals of justice and equity in the face of detrimental, discriminatory treatment and even violence, these are diverse communities facing clear challenges and with specific needs in healthcare and beyond.
This statement is specifically focused on lesbian, homosexual, and bisexual people.

In the s and s, many therapists offered aversion therapy of the kind featured in A Clockwork Orange to "cure" male homosexuality. This typically involved showing patients pictures of naked men while giving them electric shocks or drugs to produce them vomit, and, once they could no longer bear it, showing them pictures of naked women or sending them out on a "date" with a young nurse. Needless to say, these mean and degrading methods proved entirely ineffective.
First published in , DSM-II (the second edition of the American classification of mental disorders, and a forerunner of DSM-5) still listed homosexuality as a mental disorder.
